The former Dallas County Courthouse, a Romanesque structure affectionately known as "Old Red," stands on Houston Street, between Main and Commerce, overlooking Dealey Plaza. It was built in 1890 and is presently being renovated for use as a museum of history. A Dallas visitors center is in operation on the ground floor. A bell tower, long ago dismantled due to safety concerns, once stood atop "Old Red." Today, only four curious figures called wyverns (not gargoyles) peer down from the roof.
