Can you help?

For several years now, I've been desperately seeking information about the parents of my great-great-grandfather, Alfred Butler. If you think you may have some information that would be helpful to me, please read on.

Alfred was born, according to his Mexican War discharge certificate, in Bertie County, North Carolina. His date of birth was circa 1824-1826, based on his age as given on the discharge certificate, the record of his marriage, and census records.

I have no idea where Alfred was from birth until May 1846 when he enlisted for service in the Mexican War, in Moore's Company, the "Eutaw Rangers," in Eutaw, Greene County, Alabama. Another young man, about the same age, named Levin Butler, served in the same company. I assume they were brothers but have no proof of it.

There was an older man named Levin Butler living in Bertie County, North Carolina around this same time. He had a son name Levin who later served in the Civil War. The Levin Butler who served in the Mexican War is an entirely different person but the commonalty of names leads me to believe he was also from Bertie County originally.

There were at least two Butler families living in Greene County, Alabama in the 1840s. One originated in South Carolina. The other family came from North Carolina. I can account for all the members of the South Carolina family. Unfortunately, I can find nothing to link either Alfred Butler or his supposed brother, Levin Butler, to the North Carolina family. Moreover, evidence I've found suggests that the North Carolina family originated in Cumberland County, not Bertie County.

The patriarch of this clan was one Isaac Butler. He had three sons, one of whom, Kennard Butler, seems to be the most likely father of Alfred and Levin. Kennard Butler is listed in the 1830 Greene County, Alabama federal census with two sons the right age to be Alfred and Levin. His widow, Nancy or Nancy Ann, or just Ann, is listed in the 1840 Greene County census record with sons the right age to be Alfred and Levin. Nancy Ann was the daughter of Richard Johnson, a Revolutionary War veteran and Sarah Johnson, his wife. The Johnson family resided in North Carolina prior to coming to Alabama.

On the other hand, it may be that Alfred and Levin were recent arrivals in Greene County, Alabama when they signed up for service in the Mexican War.

So, I have many questions: Did these two young men come to Alabama straight from North Carolina? Or did they come from some other Alabama County, having migrated to Alabama with their parents during the late 1820s, the 1830s, or the early 1840s?

So far, all I've been able to do is determine which of the Butler heads-of-households listed in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 census records for Bertie County, NC and all of Alabama were NOT Alfred Butler's father. Trouble is, I still have a large pool of likely candidates.

If you know who Alfred and Levin Butler's parents were, PLEASE contact me right away. THANKS!
