My retired father accompanied me on this trip, the primary urpose of which was to conduct historical research and take photographs for a book I had been contracted to write. While exploring the Lower Rio Grande Valley, my father and I visited the site of Camp Belknap, where my great-great-grandfather, Alfred Butler, had briefly been camped with his regiment, The First Alabama Volunteers, during the summer of 1846. We also visited Brazos Island (now a peninsula), where the First Alabama Regiment had come ashore in Texas for the first time, on July 4, 1846, near the beginning of the U.S.-Mexican War.
