The Virginians

During the past nearly five years (2019-2024), my family history research has led me to discover, to both my delight and amazement, that our family (mostly on my father's side) is descended from the some of the earliest English settlers of America, men and women who at various times throughout the seventeenth century braved the long and arduous passage across the Atlantic Ocean in tiny wooden ships to build a home in what was then called "The New World." This is their story, and ours, and America's.

One of the things my research has revealed is that I have so many ancestors who were present during the earliest years of English settlement in America it's almost overwhelming! What's remarkable too is that much of the land that many of them were granted in the 17th century is still woodland or agricultural use land more than three centuries later!

One of the best things, from a genealogical standpoint, is that many of my early Virginia ancestors were prominent figures, some of who served in the Virginia House of Burgesses--America's first legislative assembly--and/or on the Governor's Council (a group of advisors to the royally-appointed governor). Consequently, for most (but unfortunately, not all) there is ample documentation of their lives. I am still astonished by how many 17th century records (deeds, wills, land patents, etc.) have survived, to help tell their story. Even the marked graves of some (but again, not all), can be visited.
