This cemetery is not only the final resting place of one of America's most famous Founding Fathers and his wife (and some assorted relatives), but also other prominent figures of the Revolutionary Era, such as Dr. Benjamin Rush.

There is a tradition of leaving a penny on Franklin's tombstone in memory of an old saying from Poor Richard's Almanac, which Franklin published, "A Penny saved is a Penny earned."

If you aren't interested in the graves of anyone in this cemetery but Franklin, you don't need to go inside the gates to see his tombstone. There is a section in the brick wall that spans twice the length of Franklin's tombstone, where you can look through metal bars instead and see it and even pitch a penny on to it from the street side. (See photo at top of this page, to see what I mean.)

There are also informative bronze plaques inset into the brick wall on either side of this metal bar section, which tell a little bit about Franklin's life.
