at Brazos Santiago, TEXAS
"There is no water here, only what we get by sinking barrels in the sand, and let the water rise in them, and it is very brackish - almost heaves us when we drink it. Clouds of sand are continually blowing over us, in our eyes and victuals. This certainly is a very disagreeable place. Not a tree to be seen and nothing to delight the eye of man. A barren waste."- Stephen F. Nunnalee, Journal, July 5, 1846
