Old Municipal Boathouse

Old Municipal Boathouse

This Art Deco-style boathouse, designed by architects Carsey & Linskie, was constructed in 1930 by the City of Dallas (at the same time as the bath house on the eastern shore). When the bathing beach opened in the summer of 1930, Dallas Mayor J. Waddy Tate arranged for the city streetcar line to be extended out to the western shore of White Rock Lake. From this 36-berth boat house, a fleet of speedboats were used to ferry parkgoers to the opposite shore.

For more than a quarter of a century, the city leased space here to speedboat owners. After motorboats were banned from the lake in 1958, a paddle boat concession operated here for nearly thirty years. Located at the foot of Tee Pee Hill, the formerly abandoned facility was turned over in 2004 to The White Rock Boathouse, Inc., a non profit corporation that now operates the old boathouse as a rowing facility. For information about memberships, rowing lessons and use of shared boats, please see The White Rock Boathouse website.

The White Rock Boathouse, Inc., has also constructed a new boathouse addition (see photo, right), adjacent to the old filter building, whixch serves as storage space for boats and equipment.
