Bear Hollow

Few people probably know it but the sediment-filled section of the lake bounded by Northwest Highway, Buckner Blvd., the Mockingbird Lane Bridge, and West Lawther Drive is called "Bear Hollow," although the author of this web site has never heard of any actual bears being spotted there.

Apart from the bicycle path that skirts it on the West Lawther Drive side, this section of the park is wild and undeveloped. On the whole it maintains an almost jungle-like atmosphere, particularly in the summer when swarms of cicadas (locally known as locusts) and untold numbers of frogs keep up a cacophony that would not sound out of place in a Tarzan movie. On account of its thick undergrowth and relative isolation, it is probably not a good idea to explore this part of the park on your own.
